CYCLING ALONG THE ECOLOGICALPARK
WITH ZIHUATANEJO’S FOREMOST BIOLOGIST

Pablo Mendizabal is a Zihuatanejo native, who studied biology at the National University of Mexico. He has made himself a name in the community because of his commitment and activities regarding the preservation of the different species of fauna and flora in and around Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. He is presently pursuing an ambitious project for a major ecological reserve and park in the swamp area around Ixtapa, for which the federal government already assigned an area of 1,600 acres.
We take you to Ixtapa, from where the bicycle tour will start: through the residential area of the Palma Real Golf Course and along the bicycle course that takes you to Playa Linda beach. Enjoy the warm sunlight of a clear afternoon on your easy to handle, slow speed bike. The whole journey on bicycle is about 10 miles long, as you pass twice through the Ecological Park “Aztlan” and the observatory at “Laguna del Negro” where the fauna and flora will be explained to you. A short stop at the crocodile pit is part of the excursion, which ends at the Ixtapa Marina. You might want to stay for a sunset cocktail at one of Marina’s waterfront restaurants, before you return to the club.

Considering the relaxed atmosphere and flawless attention you are enjoying, you might never want to leave the comfort of your Club, but then you may return home without ever knowing what a great place you have chosen for your vacation. Blending into the lush green backdrop of the Sierra Madre, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo lies along a hilly tropical coastline and is surrounded by dozens of white sandy beaches. We are fortunate to live in a paradise that blends two very unique destinations into one. Though the two areas are quite different in habitat and style, they still share that same wonderful sense of Mexican hospitality.
Ixtapa, the modern, master planned resort with
perfectly maintained landscaping, vanguard architectural design and services, a luxurious Marina with yachts from all parts of the world, exclusive residential areas and two 18-hole, designer golf courses.

The area around Ixtapa (Nahuatl: land of white sand) is composed mainly of swamps and minor lakes, as well as a river outlet into the Pacific ocean, and is heavily populated by over 320 species of birds, 2 kinds of iguanas as well as crocodiles and other reptiles. About half of the bird species we can observe are year round residents, while the other half migrates to the area during the winter months or early spring. We will be looking for colorful species, such as the “White Throated Magpie-Jay” (Calocitta Formosa), the “Yellow-Winged Cacique” (Cacicus melanicterus) and the “Citreoline Trogon” (Trogon citreolus), among others. The flora is just as varied and the biologist in charge will gladly explain it in detail to the interested listener.
Meet your guide at the crocodile pit, where you can observe (besides the crocodiles) turtles, iguanas and mangrove birds. From there it’s a 2½ mile walk through the Ecological park “Aztlan”, observing many of the most representative birds and plants of the region, including ecosystems such as the tropical dry forest, the tropical semi-deciduous forest and the mangrove.

You may have linger and enjoy fresh lobster or other seafood at exceptional prices. At a small extra charge, an optional boat trip through the lagoon can be taken to enhance the unique experience.
Drive back to the hotel in the early afternoon.

Mexico's artists are famous for their ingenuity and unique sense of form and color. In many cases, the appreciation of the countries natural beauty and the sometimes very intricate sense of humor is playfully integrated into works of art. A great variety of regional crafts is to be found in selected stores in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. To give just a few examples: Black clay and hand woven textiles and rugs from Oaxaca, beautiful colonial style furniture from Michoacan, ceramic, blown glass, leather and paintings from Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, masks from different Indian cultures, all the way from Yucatan in the south to Sonora in the north of the country and, naturally, silver from Taxco in our home state Guerrero.

Your guide will make sure you are introduced to some of the most interesting shops and give you expert advise on where, how and at what price to purchase. The limited duration of this tour obviously does not allow for an extensive shopping spree, but it will show you the places to go when you are ready to spend your money.
We wish to prepare the guide and make sure you will see the stores and galleries, which interest you most. Therefore, if you have any special request let member reception know a day before the tour.
